About the School

Washington School was founded in 1892 and continues its tradition of providing students with an excellent, challenging education in a school environment that promotes and cultivates the acquisition of lifelong learning skills. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing setting in which instruction is aimed at educating the whole child by promoting academic growth consistent with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The faculty, staff, and parents dedicate their time and talents to the school in order to make each student’s educational experience an exceptional one.

Students are taught skills development in reading, writing, and spelling in a comprehensive manner using a variety of educational techniques and strategies centered around a Balanced Literacy approach and Writers’ Workshop. Everyday Math emphasizes “giving students a wide, diversified range of mathematical experiences in real life contexts” and introduces them to multiple strategies of getting the correct answer all while improving thinking skills. Use of the iReady software allows for instruction that is tailored to the needs of individual students.

Technologically, Washington School classrooms have access to Chromebooks and Google Classroom. Our Math and Science series incorporate technology through the use of online activities and games and virtual labs.

During the school year, many outstanding educational programs and activities designed to enhance student learning and social-emotional development are provided. Our students enjoy the experience of participating in these activities while gaining knowledge and developing self-esteem. Highlights of the year included: Character Education, Anti Bullying assemblies, Health and Safety assemblies organized by our school Nurse, Helping Hands Club emphasizing community service, DARE, Field Day, and Fire Safety, among others.

Our Parents’ Association (WSPA) engages in a vital, integral role in our school by supporting and collaborating in numerous school programs and projects, involvement with our Building Leadership Team, a wide variety of fundraisers, fifth grade yearbook and class trips, class parents, and a multitude of other exciting activities. Their efforts and contributions complement our academic programs to make Washington School a special place to learn.
